Accreditation
FOUR YEAR ACCREDITATION: 2002-2006
The EVMS Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery has received a full four-year re-accreditation from the Otolaryngology Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduated Medical Education (ACGME). The decision was based on a site visit completed by a Committee representative in November 2001.
The decision for a four-year approval is particularly gratifying in light of recent changes at EVMS and the increasing complexity of the re-accreditation process. Since the last site visit, the Medical School has retained a new President and Dean, the Department faculty has grown to seven individuals, including a new Chairman. In addition, the Department has responded to changes in ACGME standards by developing a formal curriculum for each post-graduate year, a computer-assisted system of resident evaluation and numerous new policies to keep pace with changing requirements in such areas as resident supervision, promotion and work hours.
New standards in residency training have emerged with the development of the ACGME Outcomes Project requiring proof of resident proficiency in the areas of patient car, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, inter-personal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. The new requirements will once again require substantive changes by the time of the Department's next site visit in 2006. |
