Mission Statement

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School considers the training of residents among its most critical functions. It is the goal of the Department to graduate ethical and compassionate residents with a comprehensive fund of knowledge and excellent surgical skills who are prepared for either general otolaryngology practice or for additional training in the subspecialty of their choice.

Resident education is accomplished through an intensive program of didactics and examinations, cadaveric surgical training, and hands-on experience in the operating room. In addition residents are educated in and must meet the objectives as related to the General Competencies for the applicable PGY level. It is also the philosophy of the Department that training in research and laboratory skills is essential for graduates to be able to read and critically examine the medical literature. To these ends, the Department’s faculty strives to create and maintain an atmosphere that fosters independent thinking and inquiry while ensuring the teaching of fundamental medical and surgical principles.
